Vitamin K1 intake reduces the risk of developing diabetes

October 07, 2013

In a previous study of 1069 elderly people free of diabetes but at risk of developing heart disease by the same institution Vitamin K1 intake was again related to diabetes risk. The findings of the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in November 2012, shows that Vitamin K1 intake was substantially lower in subjects who eventually developed type 2 diabetes. After adjustment for potential confounders, the risk of diabetes was lower with increasing levels of Vitamin K1 consumption. Moreover, subjects who increased their dietary intake of vitamin K during the follow-up had a large decrease in diabetes incidence, over 50% reduced incidence, compared with subjects who decreased or did not change the amount of K1 they consumed.
