A joint team of researchers from China and the USA reviewed quality studies performed between the years 1990 to 2008 identifying 28 studies as meeting their inclusion criteria. Flaxseed Lignans strongly reduced cholesterol levels (both total and LDL-cholesterol) whereas whole Flaxseed also reduced cholesterol but to a lesser degree. Flaxseed Oil failed to lower cholesterol. The Flaxseed and Flaxseed Lignans worked best on postmenopausal women and with individuals with high cholesterol. The review is published in the August 1, 2009 issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
