Hydrolyzed Collagen makes the skin younger in older women

September 10, 2013

Many Americans are familiar with collagen cosmetics, applying them to their face to fill in fine lines and improve skin hydration. However, Collagen works much better when you swallow it and it is starting a cultural wave of beauty use under the slogan “beauty from within.” High quality hydrolyzed collagen (collagen reduced to a smaller particle size so we can absorb it) when swallowed affects collagen metabolism in our body.

Researchers at the University of Kiel (Germany) and the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) supplemented 69 women between the ages of 35 to 55 with hydrolyzed collagen or placebo every day for two-months. The elasticity of the skin improved by 30% compared with placebo with the use of collagen and improvements began the first month of supplementation. The collagen worked better, improving skin more in women over the age of 50. Four-weeks after the study ended the women’s skin were checked again and the good effects remained. Skin hydration also improved by 14% in older women. The study is published in the journal Skin Pharmacology and Physiology.
