Invite Health Podcast, Episode hosted by Jerry Hickey, Ph.
What are we made of? That’s a really interesting question. Certain foods and nutrients are so essential for human life. There are all of these different elements that combine with carbon to make humans.†
Important elements in the body
Each element in our body is so
important. We’re mostly water. About 62% of our body is water. It’s the major component in our blood, lymphatic tissue, cerebral spinal fluid, synovial joint fluid, skin and more. Every one of our cells is loaded with water.†

We’re 16% protein. Protein makes us function. We use amino acids from protein to make neurotransmitters for the brain, digestive tract and muscles. We also use it to make hormones, enzymes and our DNA and chromosomes.†
Our bodies are 20 to 30% collagen, which is connective tissue. This is where a lot of the carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen that make up our body is found. Collagen holds you together. The peptides in collagen make your ligaments and tendons and hold your bones, joints and muscles together. Your skin is about 70% collagen. As you grow older, your body makes less collagen, so it’s important to get a source of high-quality, grass-fed collagen.†
Your body is about 16% fat. The brain is made out of complex fats called lipids. These fats come from fish oils and vegetables. In there, there are also minerals such as phosphorus and vitamins like choline.†
You’re 6% minerals. The number one mineral in your body is calcium, most of which is found in your bone. It is also used for nerve and muscle function. After calcium comes phosphorus, which is easy to get through vegetables and beans in your diet.†
Toxic elements in the body
The body also contains elements that are harmful to the body and do not belong there. Some of these include arsenic, mercury, lead, aluminum and titanium dioxide. These contaminants can impact your brain, intestines, respiratory system and more.†
Choosing high-quality foods is important. A good diet allows you to receive the nutrients you need, while hopefully avoiding harmful ones that can be consumed through animals raised with antibiotics or produce grown in nutrient-depleted soil.†
