If you are a regular vitamin and supplement user, you have probably run across someone in your life, whether it’s a family member, coworker or friend, who says that you don’t need vitamins and supplements. However, when it comes to taking supplements, we have seen the many different health benefits supported by science time and time again. When we look at B vitamins across the board, certainly we see how important they are. We see the importance of Omega-3 fatty acids.
The issue is that, for traditional, mainstream medicine, they still are way behind the times. Until the pharmaceutical companies catch up with that and make prescription B vitamins or fish oils, most doctors are incredibly dismissive, which makes that a societal issue overall.
The reality of prescription medications
People may question supplements because they’re not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). We know that the FDA is the regulatory board that approves prescription medications, but let me give you the actual facts when it comes to those “safe” drugs that are out there. In just one year, there is close to two million hospitalizations because of misprescribing, overdosing or self-prescribing when it comes to medications. There are another 840,000 hospitalized patients who are given drugs that cause serious adverse reactions. In total, close to another three million people get an adverse reaction but are not actually hospitalized. In total, roughly 130,000 people annually die from prescription medications. The importance of quality supplements
Clearly, some people are not listening when their friends, family, coworkers or even doctors brush off the importance of supplementing with vitamins and minerals. We know that in this country, roughly 77% of Americans report consuming some form of a dietary supplement, whether it’s a multivitamin, Vitamin D, fish oil or something else. Within that group, you can have differences in terms of location or age, but when it comes to multivitamins, for example, roughly 60% of US adults say that they take a multivitamin. Roughly 30% of adults say that they take Vitamin D. We can keep going through. About 15% of US adults report taking fish oil. We know that taking vitamins and supplements is incredibly popular and incredibly common, but what I want to focus on is using the right supplements for your specific needs and why quality matters.†
