Important Drug Recall

Sep 30, 2004

At approximately 8:30 this morning the drug manufacturer Merck and Company announced a voluntary international recall of its 2.5 billion dollar a year drug Vioxx due to confirmed cardiovascular side effects at the regular dose of 25mg.

The deadly side effects were observed during a 3-year study assessing the ability of Vioxx to block the recurrence of polyps in the colon - growths that can transform into colon cancer. The study showed that Vioxx increased the risk of heart attack or stroke even at the standard 25mg dose. The confirmed cardiovascular risk occurred approximately after using the normal dose of Vioxx after 18 months compared to placebo. Previous research had shown this connection was likely to occur at a 50mg dosage.
