Similarly to obese individuals many older people at
high risk for heart disease are also at risk for developing diabetes. In this
study Spanish researchers at Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Reus Spain
recruited 510 elderly people and estimated their vitamin K1 intake previously
and over the course of the following year. Higher vitamin K1 intake was related
to a 15% decrease in the level of the hunger-over eating hormone called ghrelin, reduced factors involved with
over-production of insulin; a road to prediabetes, and reduced systemic
inflammation that would contribute to the development of diabetes. Vitamin K1
intake was related to a decrease in immune system activity and pancreatic and
insulin activity related to diabetes. The study is published in the January 8th,
2013 issue of the journal Cardiovascular
Diabetology.
