Higher Vitamin K1 intake associated with lowered risk of diabetes

October 07, 2013

Similarly to obese individuals many older people at high risk for heart disease are also at risk for developing diabetes. In this study Spanish researchers at Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Reus Spain recruited 510 elderly people and estimated their vitamin K1 intake previously and over the course of the following year. Higher vitamin K1 intake was related to a 15% decrease in the level of the hunger-over eating hormone called ghrelin, reduced factors involved with over-production of insulin; a road to prediabetes, and reduced systemic inflammation that would contribute to the development of diabetes. Vitamin K1 intake was related to a decrease in immune system activity and pancreatic and insulin activity related to diabetes. The study is published in the January 8th, 2013 issue of the journal Cardiovascular Diabetology.
