Fish Oil supplements improve symptoms in Alzheimer?s disease patients
Some individuals have genes which allow Alzheimer?s disease to develop at an earlier age. Scientists at Sweden?s Karolinska Institute split 174 Alzheimer?s patients into two groups. One group received fish oil supplements very high in DHA for 6-months, the second group received inactive placebo. At the end of 6-months all patients were placed on the fish oil supplements for an additional 6-month period. In patients genetically susceptible to early on Alzheimer?s disease the fish oil capsules reduced agitation. In patients not genetically susceptible to early onset disease the fish oils improved symptoms of depression. The study is published online ahead of print in the June 21st, 2007 edition of the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.
