Silica Supplement
Silica is a common mineral that is found in soil, and fruits and vegetables (a trace amount). Silica plays a role in collagen formation, making it a very important mineral for strong hair, skin and nails. It may allow for a healthier, more youthful looking appearance for your skin. Silica is also highly beneficial for building strong bones and can provide structural support for blood vessels, kidneys and the bladder. It may also be very helpful in supporting normal urinary function and control. Silica is thought to support an aging brain, cell growth, healthy circulation, and the health of the veins and arteries.†

The Science Behind Silica
Research published in Brazilian Dermatology states that for the skin, it is suggested that silicon is important for optimal collagen synthesis and activation of hydroxylating enzymes, improving skin strength and elasticity. Regarding hair benefits, it was suggested that a higher silicon content in the hair results in a lower rate of hair loss and increased brightness. [1]
Research from the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology states that brittle nail syndrome appears to be relieved with supplementation with a 2.5-mg dose of biotin daily or a 10-mg dose of silicon daily. [2]
Research published in the Journal for Nutritional Health and Aging states that accumulating evidence over the last 30 years strongly suggests that dietary silicon is beneficial to bone and connective tissue health and it was recently reported that there are strong positive associations between dietary Silicon intake and bone mineral density in the US and UK. It has been found that Silica metabolism is controlled by steroid and thyroid hormones and that inadequate or reduced hormone or thyroid activity, as occurs with ageing, decreases silica absorption. Silica is also responsible for collagen synthesis. [3]
Research from the Nutrition and Health in Aging Journal found that Silica intake is essential for the health of the bones, joints, cartilage, collagen, and disruption of mineral balance in the femur and vertebrae. Silica is found in numerous tissues including bone, tendons, aorta, liver and kidney. [4]
