Colostrum contains a series of nourishing components that help to establish beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract and is also supportive for occasional digestive disturbances, as it encourages healthy passing of stool. Colostrum supplements have also been used by athletes to assist with recovery time after a workout and to support lean body mass and healthy immune system function.†
Colostrum is commonly referred to as “liquid gold” and is a mother's first milk that offers tremendous immune support to newborn babies. Colostrum is a substance produced by the mammary glands in the late stages of pregnancy before lactation. Colostrum contains antibodies that protect newborns and it is lower in fat and higher in protein than regular milk.†

The Science Behind Colostrum
Research published in Frontiers in Bioscience reviews the composition of colostrum and the digestive and immune system health-supportive use of this "first milk" in humans. Colostrum is a complex biological liquid that is richer in antimicrobial peptides, immune-regulating compounds and growth factors than the milk commonly purchased today. The main functions of colostrum are to provide essential nutritional components, strengthen the natural defense system, modulate immune response, balance intestinal microbiota and support the growth of several tissues.
Research published in the Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine found that supplementation with colostrum showed a beneficial effect on gastrointestinal health and immune health in humans and other mammals. Bovine colostrum is rich in immunity, growth and antimicrobial factors, which promote tissue growth and the maturation of digestive tract and immune function in neonatal animals and humans.
This review published in Frontiers in Nutrition aimed to look at the potential immune system health benefits of supplementing with colostrum. Numerous studies have shown the health beneficial effects of bovine immunoglobulins on the human immune system. The stability and functional effects of orally ingested bovine immunoglobulins in milk products are described and potential mechanisms of action have been recognized.
