Maca Root

Maca, Lepidium Meyenii, is a nutritious root vegetable related to the turnip. Maca has been used in traditional medicine for its beneficial effects on sexual health for both men and women, energy levels, and endurance. Maca root may have a protective effect on the prostate. Maca also acts as an adrenal adaptogen, helping the body adapt to stress and may speed up recovery time after a workout.†

The Science Behind Maca Root

A study published in Pharmaceuticals found that supplementation with Maca Root helped to support a significant improvement in mood, energy, and health status. Maca root was also found to be an energy balance support as a balance in cortisol levels was also witnessed. [1]

Research from BMC Complementary Medicine Therapies has shown supplementation with Maca Root to help improve sexual function in men. This is partly due to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, especially with the prostate. Maca supplementation has also shown to be a male-hormonal support as healthy levels of cortisol and testosterone were noticed among participants. [2]

A study published in Evidence Based Complementary Medicine stated that supplementation with Maca Root helped to improve sexual function and desire in healthy menopausal women. Maca also showed adaptogen capabilities offsetting high stress hormone production. Maca was also found to be a support for healthy bone formation and protects the skin from ultraviolet radiation. [3]

Research from the Open Biomedical Engineering Journal states that supplementing with Maca Root showed to be an effective support against exercise fatigue. Sports fatigue causes elevated blood urea nitrogen, may be due to stress, increased cortisol, plasma amino acids in muscle decline, increased muscle protein breakdown, and other factors lead to decreased kidney function. After supplementation with Maca Root the cortisol and blood urea nitrogen levels among the participants declined significantly.  [4]
