L-Arginine Supplement

L-Arginine is an essential, protein-creating amino acid that must be consumed through the diet, since it is not created naturally in the body. It is one of the 20 most common amino acids and it can be found in a wide variety of animal and plant food sources such as red meat, poultry, fish and dairy products. Supplementation is recommended for some individuals in order to obtain an adequate supply of L-Arginine in the body.†

In the body, L-Arginine plays an essential role in cell division, immune function, hormone release, and wound healing. It is a key building block of healthy tissues and bones and helps to build protein. L-Arginine becomes converted into nitric oxide through the process of nitrogen metabolism. Nitric oxide naturally performs many vital functions in the body, including relaxation of the heart’s blood vessels to support proper blood flow. Nitric Oxide is also involved in the release of growth hormones, as well as insulin. L-Arginine may assist the body in ammonia detoxification. It may also help support sexual health in aging men.†

L-Arginine can be taken in combination with L-Lysine, which has been shown to have potential benefits for individuals who experience high levels of stress.†

The Science Behind L-Arginine

Research in Biology of Sport explains how supplementation with L-Arginine can enhance exercise performance and recovery. L-Arginine is among the most popular ergogenics intended to enhance strength, power and muscle recovery associated with both anaerobic and aerobic exercise. L-Arginine administration has been claimed to promote an increase in blood perfusion in the active muscle, increasing substrates necessary for improving muscular recovery and protein synthesis during and/or after exercise. L-Arginine supplementation could also improve exercise capacity by decreasing lactate accumulation, which has been shown to be involved in the development of muscular fatigue by increasing muscular acidity. [1]

Research from Frontiers in Oncology indicates that supplementation with L-Arginine helps the immune system by increasing the activity of T-helper cells among others. When the levels of L-arginine are increased the metabolism of these cells is reorganized and the cells survive longer and are more effective in fighting invaders to support the immune response in humans. [2]

Research from Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology explains how supplementation with L-Arginine helps to increase Nitric Oxide production thereby protecting vascular health. [3]
