The Science Behind Glucosamine & Chondroitin
Research from BMC Research Notes found Glucosamine to play a key role in cartilage formation and strength. It is a naturally occurring substance in the body and is essential for the normal growth and health of connective tissues such as articular cartilage in synovial joints. Glucosamine is one of the major constituents of the extracellular matrix of cartilage and a building block for proteoglycan synthesis. [1]
A review from Maturitas found that Chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine sulfate to have beneficial effects on the metabolism of in vitro models of cells from synovial joints. They increase type II collagen and help improve the building up and breaking down balance of cartilage. [2]
Research published in the International Journal of Rheumatology found glucosamine and chondroitin stimulate the building up of the cartilage, as well as supporting proper inflammatory responses in the body. [3]
