Homocysteine Hx®

Homocysteine is an amino acid that your body uses to make proteins. It can also be obtained by eating meat. In the body, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6 and Folate break down homocysteine but, over time, levels can build up in the bloodstream which can impact cardiovascular health, cognitive function and more. High levels may also indicate a deficiency in Vitamin B12 and Folate. Homocysteine Hx® combines Folic Acid and B-vitamins - which are required for the breakdown of homocysteine - into safer amino acids. The addition of Garlic Bulb Powder supports overall heart and circulatory health.†
Heightened levels of homocysteine may lead to a variety of health concerns, including heart disease, migraine headaches, and poor cognition.†

The Science Behind Ingredients in Homocysteine Hx®

Research from the European Journal of Pediatrics states that in the case of homocysteine, the vitamins B12, B6 and folic acid are involved in its metabolism, acting as coenzymes. Homocysteine levels directly affect the health of the brain, heart and other systems in the body. It is considered a marker for heart and brain health. In the healthy population with "normal" homocysteine levels and a vitamin status currently considered to be adequate, folate seems to play the most important role in determining the blood homocysteine level. This has been derived from supplementation studies as well as from statistical correlation analysis regarding the relationship of the three vitamins to homocysteine. The metabolism of a substrate is closely linked to that of its cofactors. [1]

A study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found a direct correlation between plasma levels of B2 and B12 with levels of homocysteine among children and adults. The study also found that certain foods correlated with a favorable homocysteine level such as milk, fruits and cereals, while favorable B2 levels were seen with intake of just milk and fruits. More research should be done to determine how diet and supplements directly affect human health, especially in regards to the brain and heart. [2]

Research from the Journal of Nutrition found that vascular health which affects both the micro and macro circulation to the brain and heart may be linked to oxidative stress which then causes less nitric oxide available. Aged garlic contains compounds that can act as an antioxidant agent and stimulates nitric oxide generation in vascular cells in humans. [3]
