Strontium is a naturally-occurring mineral found in small amounts in water and food, as well as in our bones. But the amount of strontium found in food would not be sufficient for bone-building, so it must be taken in supplement form in order to reap its bone-building benefits. Strontium, unlike other common bone-building minerals that support the health of older bones, supports the rebuilding of new, strong bones. Strontium may complement calcium's bone building activity. Up to 99% of the body’s Strontium supply is stored in the bones. Studies have shown Strontium can help promote thicker, stronger, less fragile bones. Minerals in citrate form have greatly improved absorption, with higher potency in fewer capsules. Citrate itself is used in the production of energy by all cells in our body, making this a very natural form of the mineral for our body. Strontium may be helpful for the bones of women after menopause and for men with low testosterone.†

The Science Behind Strontium
Research from Current Osteoporosis Reports states that supplementation with Strontium produced steady and significant bone mineral density and helped to support bone health and strength.
Research published in The Cochrane Library Review states that supplementing with Strontium helped with both health and function of bones. This clinical trial showed that the participants in the strontium group had 15% to 20% lower levels of a urinary biomarker of cartilage degradation than those in the placebo group.
A study published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health found that supplementation with strontium is just as effective as bisphosphonates in raising bone mineral density levels in hip, spine, and femoral neck sites. This regimen also appears to show efficacy in individuals where bisphosphonate therapy was previously unsuccessful in maintaining or raising bone mineral density.

I am a 67 year old female. Two years ago my Dexa scan showed an 8.7 decrease in bone mineral density of the femoral neck. I then took strontium for 1 year. My most recent Dexa scan showed a 4.7 increase in bone mineral density of the femoral neck. The doctor is asking what am I doing?
