Bromelain safe and effective treatment for acute sinusitis

December 15, 2008

Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme derived from the stem of the pineapple plant. Bromelain contains a combination of several protein-digesting enzymes. Bromelain is used as an aid for digestion and for reducing inflammation. In Germany Bromelain is used for treating bruising, the aftereffects of surgery and for treating sinusitis.

In this study German researchers recruited 116 children with acute sinusitis from 19 centers across Germany. The children were split into three treatment groups. One group of 20 children was treated with standard drug therapy, the second group of 62 children received Bromelain, and the third group of 34 children was treated with both standard therapy and Bromelain. The patients receiving the Bromelain alone recovered the quickest with symptoms ending within 6.66 days. Standard therapy caused a recovery within 8 days and combined therapy caused a recovery within 9 days. The Bromelain was very effective for treating sinusitis and was very safe. The study is published in the March-April 2005 issue of the journal In-Vivo.
