Beetroot Improves Blood Pressure in New Study
In a small study of women and men with elevated systolic blood pressure ranging from 140 to 159, this would be the top figure in your blood pressure reading, consuming beets made into juice lowered their blood pressure by 10mmHg. The study was performed at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and is published in the journal Hypertension, a journal of the American Heart Association.
Beetroot is loaded with betalains, a group of plant antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory activity and that help the liver rid the body of toxins. Beets also supply Trimethylglycine which lowers the level of homocysteine. Elevated homocysteine is implicated in many health conditions including heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Beets are rich in nitrates that improve circulation; this helps lower high blood pressure and improves physical performance during exercise and when participating in a sport. Some people experience red urine after eating beets; this can be a sign that the person has a problem utilizing iron.
