Gum Disease

Written by Scientific Director and Pharmacist, Jerry Hickey

At one time, the medical world thought that gum disease was just about loose teeth, bad breath, and many expensive trips to a dentist; unfortunately this is very far from the truth.

What is Gum Disease?

There are pockets of infection in gum disease. The tiny blood vessels supplying the area are overburdened with the immune systems infection fighting cells, primed for combat mode. Many of these cells escape to the general circulation and primed, as they are, light up little starbursts of inflammation.

All of these starbursts eventually add up to big problems, as they attack blood vessel walls increasing the risk of heart disease and even stroke and heart attack. But that’s not all, the invaders and gum disease are also being increasingly connected as causative with other health issues; poor blood sugar control in diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, just to name a few. Gum disease is not the only cause of these conditions but certainly good dental hygiene improves the likelihood that you will live a healthier life, and the way the science is accumulating; possibly a longer life.

The Importance of Proper Oral Hygiene

Poor oral hygiene is often linked to poor overall health. The mouth is a common place for bacteria to thrive, which can have a harmful impact on your health along with causing bad breath, cavities and tooth decay. Specially formulated PerioDental® formulas are an excellent addition to your brushing and flossing routine: the herbs and nutrients in these products are instrumental in maintaining good oral hygiene, freshening breath, and nutritionally supporting the health of the gums.

Various antioxidant components support oral health. The potent antioxidant Green Tea, Folic Acid and Bilberry benefits gum health and suppors mouth and throat mucosa. Myrrh, Witch Hazel and Aloe Vera provide great support for the immune system. Concentrated, yet soothing nutritional ingredients like Grape Seed Extract, Clove Oil, Aloe Vera and Glutathione support long-lasting fresh breath, as well as healthy teeth and gums. They also provide support for oral tissue, help balance bacteria in the mouth, reduce irritation due to poor oral hygiene, and provide great antioxidant support with natural herbs and plant extracts. White Tea Extract combined with CoQ10, Zinc and Vitamin C, are three very important antioxidants for whiter, brighter teeth, to relieve bleeding gums and promote wound healing. If you are looking for a healthy mouth, teeth, gum and throat support the all-natural ingredients Grape Seed, Ascorbyl Palmitate and Glutathione, provide tissue support with antioxidants .
