Anticancer Evidence Mounting for the Soy Isoflavone Genistein
There is a significant correlation between the amount of genistein in the blood and a decrease in hormone related cancers in Asian, European and American populations suggesting that genistein may reduce tumor formation. Genistein blocks an enzyme called protein tyrosine kinase that cancer cells use for energy and to grow, and it inhibits the ability of a cancer cell to create other cancer cells. Genestein inhibits the ability of a tumor to create its own blood supply and feed itself, and it also inhibits metastasis. Genistein inhibits a number of genes involved with cancer formation and it improves the ability of at least five chemotherapeutic agents to fight cancer. Genestein increases the effectiveness of radiation against both prostate and breast cancer. Genistein decreases the risk of developing melanoma type skin cancer due to solar radiation exposure.
Of the more than 4,500 studies on genistein in primary, peer-reviewed journals, almost 1,000 pertain to its anticancer activity, and over 400 explore how it works. Biotechnology firms produce dependable genistein under quality controlled conditions in Japan, the USA, and in Australia. The study is published in the current edition of the journal Advances in Experimental and Medical Biology.
Perilla Seed Frutescens Ingredient protects the Liver from Cancer Causing Fungal Toxins found in Foods
Aflatoxin is a poison made by a fungus. Aflatoxin can grow on peanuts, Brazil nuts, and corn. If you precook rice and let it sit, aflatoxin can grow on the rice. In the laboratory, aflatoxin is one of the chemicals that scientists use to dependably and consistently cause liver cancer. Aflatoxin is so dangerous that in 1960, over 100,000 turkeys died in England from liver cancer. The liver cancer was caused by the growth of aflatoxin on rancid peanuts used in their feed. In the third world the incidence of liver cancer is high because of the growth of aflatoxin in their food supply. It is thought that aflatoxin is one of the chemicals sprayed on our troops by Saddam Hussein during Operation Desert Storm.
In this study human liver tissue was exposed to aflatoxin and a second dangerous fungal toxin known as ochratoxin. The aflatoxin and ochratoxin cause a great deal of inflammation, damage and also cancer in the human liver. The ingredient rosmarinic acid, found in high concentrations in Perilla seed frutescens was able to strongly protect the liver tissue. The Perilla seed ingredient reduced free radical damage and inflammation in the liver tissue and prevented the death of the liver cells due to fungal-toxin poisoning. The study is published in the July-August 2004 edition of the Journal of Applied Toxicology.
Perilla Frutescens Extract Reduces Asthma and Blocks Allergy Caused by Dust Mite in Mice
In this study scientists tested the ability of the anti-inflammatory herb Perilla frutescens to block the allergy associated asthma in mice allergic to dust mites. Giving the Perilla frutescens by mouth prevented the increase in inflammation causing immune cells in the lungs and airways of mice allergic to dust mites. The increase in allergy associated IgG1 was also blocked. The study is published in the June 2004 edition of the journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy, Journal of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
