Lycopene is a natural carotenoid found in tomatoes that is responsible for its red pigment. More importantly, lycopene is the antioxidant that scientists believe is actively responsible for the many health benefits of the tomato. Clinical studies show that tomatoes, as part of a healthy diet, help to prevent cellular and genetic damage, supporting heart, circulatory, prostate and skin health. In order for lycopene to be activated in the body, however, the tomatoes must be cooked into a sauce or stew. Therefore, lycopene supplementation may be a quicker and more convenient option for many individuals.
Further trials have shown that Lycopene may protect healthy cells by affecting the insulin-like growth factor intracellular pathway, particularly in the prostate. Lycopene, as a dietary supplement, is extremely valuable to support healthy cells for health and function of the prostate and breast and various other areas of health, including the heart, circulatory system, and skin.
Lycopene has also been shown in various studies to preserve and support the elasticity of the blood vessel walls. As we age, or in those with specific lifestyle factors such as smoking or poor nutrition, the elasticity of the blood vessel walls decreases. This ultimately causes the heart to work harder in order to pump blood throughout the body, putting stress on the blood vessels, heart and kidneys. Lycopene, by working to support the elasticity of the blood vessel walls, may help protect the heart and kidneys.

Jerry Hickey is a pharmacist and radio personality and fills the esteemed role of Scientific Director and President of Invite Health. He has spent his professional life analyzing nutritional information and medical studies with the aim of creating the highest quality and most natural nutraceuticals for user’s maximum health benefits. Here, Jerry speaks about the benefits of Lycopene…
Lycopene is back in the news and I’m going to speak about a study from the University of Cambridge, which is one of the top ten research institutions in the world. When they gave people lycopene, it dramatically cut their risk of heart disease. The way it did it restored elasticity and efficiency to their blood vessels by 50%. It boosted the health of blood vessels and it improved their ability to work by 50%, and that’s an important thing.
On your blood vessel walls, there’s a very important coating of cells; they’re called endothelial cells, and these cells line your blood vessels shoulder-to-shoulder like carpet and work together. They push your blood vessels open. For dramatic reasons, if you are lifting up a heavy package, your back muscles, your abdominal muscles, your chest muscles, your shoulder and arm muscles, all need more blood and oxygen, otherwise you can’t lift up the package. That’s how you get energy: you burn oxygen for energy. To get the oxygen to your muscles, the blood vessel walls have to expand. They have to open and dilate. It’s these cells, the endothelial cells that push them open. When they gave these people lycopene, it improved the elasticity of these cells and providing them with the ability to push the blood vessels open easier. Now, if they couldn’t work, and you see this in many people, you see it in obese people; it’s very common when they develop metabolic syndrome. You see them in people with liver disease, kidney disease and autoimmune diseases. You see it in people who have high cholesterol, high triglycerides, smokers, people who abuse alcohol and people who don’t eat vegetables and fruits. Those blood vessels don’t work well. So, to get blood and oxygen to the muscles, because they need it, because you’re lifting up a heavy object, the heart has to pump harder, and eventually faster. This is called high blood pressure, and it leads to terrible things. It leads to vascular dementia and kidney damage. The worst thing for your health is having high blood pressure; it’s the number one bad thing that can happen in your 30s and 40s. It’s a terrible thing.
Carotenoids reduce the risk of hip fracture. This just came out of the news. There was a study from Cambridge University near Oxford in the lower part of England. And outside of the United States, there are only two universities that are in the top 10 consistently. You always see Yale and Princeton and Harvard and maybe Stanford or MIT or one of those. They’re always in the top 10. Columbia or Cornell, they’re always up there. Outside the U.S., the only two that are consistently in the top 10 universities in the world, the best universities in the world are both in England: it’s Cambridge and Oxford. So at Cambridge, they doled out a modified lycopene supplement that was better for absorption. For instance, Invite Health has lycopene and uses the Capsugel technology that boosts the absorption of lycopene so it’s similar to the quality of our product.
Lycopene is a red carotenoid that you generally get in fruits like tomatoes or watermelon or a ripe guava. And this red carotenoid is incredibly powerful for your skin. There are certain carotenoids that help reverse wrinkling like the astaxanthin that’s in krill oil or the lycopene that’s in the tomato paste and the tomato sauce. We have a lycopene we treat with technology that prevents its exposure to oxygen, keeping it fresh and boosts its absorption. So that’s what they did here except they use a different technology.
In this study they actually attached the lycopene to attack the sugar. To me, that’s not reasonable. I don’t think it’s the best way to boost the absorption. When they gave people this and it boosted the elasticity and efficiency of their blood vessel walls by 50%. That’s an unbelievable finding. When your blood vessels get older, they stiffen up and everything suffers; your brain suffers, your eyes suffer, your muscles suffer, your endurance and your heart and your skin suffer as well.
I think there are certain supplements that help reverse the laws of elasticity. Resveratrol is absolutely one of them. Ubiquinol is absolutely one of them. Krill oil and lycopene are unbelievably good for the elasticity of your blood vessel walls as well.
