Green Coffee Beans
Jerry Hickey is a pharmacist and radio personality and fills the esteemed role of Scientific Director and President of Invite Health. He has spent his professional life analyzing nutritional information and medical studies with the aim of creating the highest quality and most natural nutraceuticals for user’s maximum health benefits. Here, Jerry speaks about the benefits of green coffee beans…
We came out with a green coffee bean supplement. We had people calling us with their issues. They were asking us about the green coffee beans on the market. I said, “Listen, they’re out there, but a lot of them are really not what you want to take.” I’ll tell you why. Green coffee beans; you pick them and you roast them. It’s a seed, by the way. It’s really green coffee seed, but we’ll call it a bean because everybody calls it a coffee bean. They pick the coffee, they throw away the berry, and then they take the seed of the berry, just like the seed of a cherry or the seeds of a grape and they roast it and then you crush it and you make a cup of coffee in the morning. That is not the one that makes you burn fat. That is not the one that helps you get rid of weight because, when you roast the coffee bean, you lose the things that burn the fat, and further, you increase the amount of caffeine, because the concentration of caffeine goes up relative to the things you’re losing. So, when they roast a coffee bean, they lose the ferulic acid, the caffeic acid, and the chlorogenic acid; the chlorogenic acid being the most common antioxidant in coffee and the most important for fat burning.
So, regular brewed morning coffee doesn’t really help you burn fat and it has a lot of caffeine. When you take the raw green coffee bean, it doesn’t have as much caffeine. In fact, when they gave it to people in different studies, it didn’t raise their blood pressure. A cup of coffee can raise your blood pressure. When they give people the raw coffee bean, the green coffee seed, that doesn’t raise your blood pressure, that doesn’t make you hyper, that doesn’t speed up your pulse rate and your heartbeat; it doesn’t have any of those negative effects. What it does is burn fat. When I looked at the reviews of studies and when I reviewed the results of the studies, it shows that people lose from 0.7 pounds to well over 2 pounds per week. But the average weight loss is a pound to a pound and a half per week which is a very good rate of fat loss. Losing a pound and a half of fat each week is wonderful. That means that within a month, you can lose 4 to 6 pounds. Within two months, you can lose 8 to 12 pounds. Within three months, some people will lose 24 pounds and some people will lose 12 pounds. So, it varies from person to person.
But when I reviewed the human clinical trials that I got my hands on for the green coffee seed the typical weight loss was, on average, a pound to a pound and a half, though 2 pounds is more common than 0.8 pounds. So, here’s a study just like that. It’s a local study from the University of Scranton. That’s in northern Pennsylvania. So, doctors at the University of Scranton recruited overweight people. They made them go through three different periods with a two-week intervention, a two-week washout in between. So, for six weeks, they put them on one phase of the study. One phase involved an inactive placebo. One phase was with the green coffee seed. In between each phase, they had two weeks where they didn't use anything, so that the effects of the last phase were washed out. Everybody in the study went through all three phases at different times; some people are in phase one, some people are in phase two, some people are in phase three, and then, they switched them. What they found on the green coffee seed but not on placebo, is that people lost a lot of weight. By the way, they monitored their calories. This was not a study for a weight loss diet and it was not a study for physical activity. So anyway, they only burned, on average, 400 calories per day in physical activity. You could probably do that just by going shopping in the mall. They were burning 400 calories per day which is a very low level of caloric burning. So, these people obviously were not exercising. Now, the second thing is they were eating, on average 2,400 calories per day. It’s a lot of food; that’s a big breakfast, that’s a big lunch, that’s a big dinner and that’s a snack in between. Those on the green coffee bean lost 18 pounds on average. That’s within 12 weeks of use, and it wasn’t even a study of 12 weeks. There were six weeks, a two-week washout, and then another six-week round of the green coffee seed. But over the course of 12 weeks total, they lost 18 pounds of mostly fat. It was almost all fat on average. Some of the people only lost 10 pounds. Others lost over 12 pounds. So, there is a variation. For some people, it works better than others, but they all lost weight on the green coffee seed, and they didn't change their diet or their exercise routine. So, imagine if they all of a sudden started taking walks everyday and started eating more sensibly, substituting a piece of salmon for a cheeseburger. Take away the cheeseburger with bacon and the French fries and substitute a piece of salmon and a salad; you’re already losing weight.
So, when they gave them the green coffee seed, they lost 18 pounds on average over the 12-week period. That was 10% percent of their body weight, 16% of their body fat. Some of them only lost about 8 to 10 pounds. Many lost 25 to 26 pounds. This was in the Journal of Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome, and Obesity, and it’s important to note that it was the real green coffee seed. It was 45% chlorogenic acid and it had about 10% other green coffee seed antioxidants. That’s an important thing. That’s what we’re offering today. We’re offering the green coffee seed with 45% chlorogenic acid, but it’s the natural thing, so it’s going to have the other beneficial polyphenols in there, too.
What they’re typically doing out there, they’re getting roasted coffee which doesn’t burn fat and they’re adding synthetic chlorogenic acid to it. That’s what a lot of companies are doing. So, you get what you pay for. Ours is extremely high in quality. It’s the same green coffee seed mixture that they use in the studies and you can expect to lose a pound, a pound and a half or 2 pounds per week.
We added lychee to the green coffee seed for two reasons: one, it’s a great antioxidant. The lychee fruit is a wonderful antioxidant. When you’re trying to step up your physical activity and exercise, it protects your immune system and it helps protect your heart and your arteries, but at the same time, they’ve shown that people who are exercising, if they do lychee it improves their endurance and their stamina. They actually got a better workout and they recovered quicker from the workout. So, that’s why we added lychee to the green coffee bean. The thought process was that when you’re dieting, you’re burning fat, which creates free radicals. So, the lychee will protect you from the free radicals you’re oxidizing. You always need antioxidants. The second thing is that lychee increases your energy and your stamina, so it’s going to be easier for people trying to lose weight to take a walk and get out there and exercise.
The green coffee bean, it’s the original thing, it’s not roasted, it’s not a cup of coffee. It’s a green coffee bean. It’s high in chlorogenic acid and it’s not the synthetic stuff they’re adding to a lot of these products from China. This is from the United States. The green coffee bean burns anywhere from a pound to a pound and a half per week. Some people might even get 2 pounds of fat burn per week. So, only use it if you’re trying to lose some fat. That’s what it’s for.
