Hair loss can be caused by an over-abundance of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) within the hair follicle. If the production of DHT is not controlled over time, the action of the DHT causes the hair follicle to degrade and diminish in size. Current research also indicates that there is an immunological factor in balding where the immune system begins to target the hair follicles. Additionally, the superoxide free radical and nitric oxide are believed to be involved in degradation of the hair follicle.*
